Abstract

In the teaching-learning process, the teacher should be able to apply various techniques to make the students more interested and motivated to engage in classroom learning activities especially in teaching writing. Therefore, the researcher would like to analyze the technique in teaching writing that teacher used. The aims of this research were a) to find out the kinds of the technique of teaching writing used by the teacher, b) the implementation of the technique and c) the reason the teacher used that technique. The researcher uses qualitative descriptive approach to identify the technique in teaching writing. The subject of this research is one English teacher who teaches in tenth-grade students in SMAN 4 Malang. The instruments of this research document analysis (lesson plan), observation and interview. The findings of this research showed that there were two kinds of techniques in teaching writing such as 1) technique in using reading and 2) technique in using a picture. The teacher applied those techniques properly. It could be seen from students’ writing development. Before using those techniques, the teacher showed a video about the descriptive text to stimulate students’ background knowledge on the topic. In using reading, the teacher asked students to make a comparison and find the different about the text and video to elaborate their ideas. Moreover, after completing the task, the teacher gives another task. The task related to the technique in using a picture, the teacher asked them to make a poster, then, describe the picture. The reason the teacher used the reading technique because it helps the students dig the idea to write. Also, by using picture technique the students can elaborate the writing effectively.
