On today's show, Robert Kuttner (@rkuttnerwrites) founder of The American Prospect joins the Majority Report to discuss his new book, The Stakes: 2020 and the Survival of American Democracy.
Kuttner and Sam begin their conversation considering the Trump presidency in terms of his cabinet members. Kuttner says the "establishment" cabinet members that have left were the primary actors keeping Trump from enacting his most anti-democratic policies. Kuttner believes that without a robust economic progress Democratic opponent in 2020, Trump will win a second term and dismantle American democracy beyond repair. While Trump appears to be a unique threat to democracy, Kuttner argues that Democrats have been equally bad in presenting an alternative vision. Democrats got into bed with Wall St under the Clinton and Obama administration which helped lay the groundwork for a Trump presidency that tied racial resentment to economic anxiety borne out of the great recession. Looking ahead to next year's election, Kuttner and Sam discuss the latest Iowa polling showing Warren's momentum growing, and how the Trump/Biden race looks now that the Ukraine whistleblower story is all over the headlines. Considering the prisoner's dilemma of the Sanders and Warren campaigns, Kuttner and Sam speculate on what happens to the progressive left if and when the teams begin to attack one another. The two conclude their interview considering what the best way to manage capitalism under a future left-progressive presidential administration, how Democrats should proceed with impeachment and the possibility of a brokered convention in Milwaukee next summer.

TODAY'S HEADLINES:
Amid new reports that a high-level whistleblower complaint against Trump centers on Ukraine, Rudy Giuliani tells CNN, ‘Yeah, I asked Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden. So what?!’
Meanwhile, Colt, maker of the AR-15, is suspending its production of the rifles for civilians, calling the move a “market-driven decision.”
And lastly, prominent black leaders prepare to condemn attacks by Bernie Sanders supporters amid the fallout of the Working Families Party’s endorsement of Elizabeth Warren.
And our QUICKER QUICKIES HEADLINES:
The number of birds across North America has dropped by nearly 3 billion since 1970, according to a report Thursday from Science Magazine. That's a 30 percent reduction in the populations, marking what National Audubon Society President David Yarnold calls, “a full-blown crisis."
Annual complaints to government intelligence watchdog hotline have more than doubled since Trump took office. According to public records numbers for the latest fiscal year are on pace to be even higher.
Washington Post reports that Housing Secretary Ben Carson warned of “big hairy men” trying to gain admittance to women’s homeless shelter during his San Francisco HUD office visit. Three people present at the meeting told the Post that the comment was an attack on transgender women.
The Bernie Sanders’ campaign is urging the Democratic National Committee to demand that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo approves legislation to extend the state’s deadline to change party registration, which is less than a month away.
And sevens months from his announcement, Bernie has become the first 2020 candidate to reach 1 million donors. It took Sanders nine months to hit a million the last time around, and it took Hillary Clinton almost a year to reach the milestone in 2016.

Writer and television producer Natalie Shure joins Michael Brooks on today's Majority Report to discuss her latest piece in the Jacobin, "Elizabeth Warren's Health Care Plan Still Leaves a Lot of Unanswered Questions." Michael and Natalie begin their conversation considering the ways politicians have described Medicare for All as anything but a single-payer system that is free at the point of service. Despite previously endorsing Bernie Sanders' Medicare for All bill, Warren's new plan for Medicare for All remains murky. Warren's strategy as it exists now does not mention eliminating cost-sharing. According to Natalie, "while single-payer shifts costs entirely into taxes, plans that maintain cost-sharing redistribute those costs more heavily onto people with greater care needs — disproportionately sicker and poorer people and women." A big sticking point for Natalie in the healthcare discourse is the word choice of politicians who refer to reforms as "access to affordable health insurance." This is not the language of candidates who are interested in creating a robust public institution, like Medicare for All, but rather the message of candidates create a more efficient market that should be reformed but not abolished. Considering all this, do voters think that Warren will fight for a vigorous Medicare for All while she hedges her language on healthcare and has pledged to make government corruption her primary campaign concern. Michael and Natalie end their conversation looking back at the Obama administration's existential fight to get the ACA passed in 2010. Remember, the ACA was initially proposed with a public option only to strip that away and then watered-down by lobbyists and health insurance special interests in DC. It will take a grassroots, continued effort from voters, pressuring their representatives to pass a Medicare for All option because the insurance industry will throw everything it has at stopping Medicare for All.
And in the Fun Half: updates from Oklahoma and Kashmir, the pedantry of the MR university, how to protect unions and expand them beyond 2019, how Bernie plans to help workers in the executive office, Michael goes deep on Bernie's housing plan, how to convince Warren supporters of Bernie's positions, the possibility of single-payer healthcare, Andrew Yang calls for the decriminalization of all drugs, Mayor Pete still wants to pay premiums, plus your calls and IMs!
