Doom mouse + keyboard pc download - right! Idea
Ultimate Doom control problems
Hey, all. I just started playing my second PC game: The Ultimate Doom. I had some difficulty getting the game to run at first on my Windows 8.1 laptop, but I found a helpful guide on Steam that directed me to make some slight alterations in the .conf files; after I did that, it runs like a charm.
However, 2 levels in to the game, I feel like I'm fighting more with the controls more so than with the enemies. The mouse has Y axis forward/backward movement, and since I adjusted the overall mouse sensitivity in the .conf files (if I hadn't, turning was painfully slow), the slightest movement sends my character either moving forward or backward somewhat erratically.
Secondly, my preference is to control forward/backwards/strafe left/right with the WASD keys (otherwise, moving forward/backwards would require me to continuously move the mouse forward, lift it up, bring it back, place it down, move it forward again, etc.), but when I am pressing these keys, I cannot initiate firing (left clicking the mouse) until the keys are released. I can begin to shoot, then press the keys, without the firing being interrupted, but I cannot start shooting while already in motion via the WASD keys. I'm sure you can understand the nuisance in that.
I looked online, and I have seen fixes for the first problem by downloading files to "patch" into the game (I'm new to this, so I guess that's the right word), but I'm suspicious of downloading files from unknown publishers (as I'm sure you can understand why). I have yet to find any solutions for my second problem. Then again, it's late, I didn't search too much, and I'm about to go to bed.
My question is: can I modify the .conf files, or any others (so I don't have to download untrustworthy files on to my PC) to fix these issues, and if so, how would I do it? And if not, what sites and sources are reputable to find "patches" for these kinks in gameplay that won't result in an unwanted virus?
Thanks for the help.

Most people use modified engines with the doom wads. One of the best ones which keeps the original feel of the game but gets rid of the annoyances of dealing with DOSBox is called Chocolate Doom. It also has a bunch of other features like the ability to add enhanced music like the Roland SC-55. It will make it really easy to customize your controls as well.
You're going about this way wrong. Doom is pretty much open source and there are amazing updated source Ports that play it in high def, full mouse look, 3d accel, drop in/out mulitplayer.

gzdoom or zandronum would be my recommendation. Install one of those and it the Doom.wad in the directory with it and go.

I just tried to fix it and was unable to due so without the "novert.com" download which was probably the shady download you spoke of.
I would also suggest using a source port like gzdoom or chocolate doom though I'm pretty sure your save won't be able to carry over.

Hmmm, so I pretty much wasted 2 dollars on Steam trying to be all legitimate, when I could've just legally downloaded an updated, optimized, and better version of the d*** game for free? Lol. I'll look into those ports. I take it they ought to be virus free?
If I wanted to save face and use the novert.com patch on the Steam version of the game (you're right, that's the patch I found), is that a trustworthy download?
Did the original play this awkward, or is it only so cumbersome to control because I'm playing it on an OS it wasnt designed for?

Chocolate Doom is the one you want, for sure.
I bought Doom95 (which is a source port version of The Ultimate Doom created by MS for Windows 95) at a Goodwill a couple of years ago and ended up just taking the WAD files from the CD and running them through Chocolate Doom, rendering the disc itself unnecessary (at best just a way to legally get the WAD files).
Thanks to release of Doom's source code, it's less of a game and more of a creativity platform. There's a thousand different ways to run Doom and even more ways to screw around with it these days.
If you want to get into PWAD fun, download something called "Doom Center". It's utterly bonkers.

I apologize for hurting your feelings, I was only trying to make you angry.

You'd still have to buy it. Source ports don't work without the original game files. Those aren't free.
There's only two that I'd recommend to a first timer.
Chocolate Doom - Very close to total authenticity, but with modern programming, more options, and better performance. Mouse support works better too.
GZDoom - Adds conservative enhancements like high resolution rendering and framerate, mouselook, a console, and a bunch of editing features that you won't care about during a first playthrough.

The original wasn't really meant to be played with the mouse. You played it with your right hand on the arrow keys, and your left hand on the Shift, Ctrl, Alt, and Space keys.
That said, turning with the mouse shouldn't be painfully slow, and moving shouldn't interfere with shooting. It sounds like the Steam release may have screwed up mouse controls and didn't bother to check/fix it, on the assumption everyone would be playing with the keyboard anyway.

For other interesting source ports there's Skulltag and the Doomsday Engine. Skulltag is a multiplayer focused port (and it has a few extra things in it) and Doomsday Engine is like Doom reimagined as Quake (so the Doom engine running on a 3D accelerated graphics platform with 3D models and such).
There's also Brutal Doom and Action Doom if you want to check out TC mods (total conversions, meaning more than just level and weapon mods but gameplay-changing features).

And I assume it's a trustworthy download, right? Sorry for my paranoia; my last computer died from what I believe to be viruses, so I'm trying to make this one last.

Oh, I see.

No way!? Well then, I might try playing it like that. I'm trying to replicate the original experience as much as possible for the sake of better understanding the roots of gaming better.

Oh yeah, I had it running until I reformatted my PC during Windows 10's install.
Chocolate Doom is like an NT-compatible vanilla Doom. It tries its very hardest to replicate every aspect of the original DOS game 1:1 while making the game itself run normally on modern hardware. They even try to keep in as many glitches that don't utterly break the game as they can.
