Your download speed is not determined simply by your Internet Service Provider. Everything you do on your computer contributes to your total speed, and safety mechanisms like firewalls can have a negative impact on the rate of download. If you want to temporarily boost your download rate, a few simple tweaks can give you slightly higher speeds. You will not double your speed, but you will see minor improvements.

Cancel any running background downloads. Operating system, video game and software updates can contribute to a slow download speed. Check for downloads by looking at the Windows system tray and examining each running application.

Download only one file at a time. Cancel simultaneous downloads to provide a higher total speed to the most important file.

Disable your firewall protection. Firewalls are good safety mechanics, but they can impair the speed of downloads. Be sure to re-enable it when the download is complete. You can normally access your firewall settings by right-clicking your security application's icon in the system tray.

Use a wired connection instead of a wireless connection. Hooking directly into your router or modem will limit signal interference and maximize your download speed.

Restart your computer, and then start the download with only your Web browser running. Fewer running applications can create a faster download environment.
