Why is my pc only downloading at 40kb/s - still variants?
Thread: Downloading at 40KB/sec. Good?Bad?Average?

Really slow, I download at about 800-900 and that's considered slow in most places.

Time to change the wodden modem, eh? I got 50MB/s, and that's good.

Yours is very, very slow. I used to be that slow a couple years back, tough, patient times... stick in there! haha
Bit off-topic:

TOTALLY NOT
BannedHi guys!
This is not the How fast is your Internet-thread.
Keep the results of your Internetspeeds there, thank you!
Tyrande was decent in Warcraft III. Why did they decide that she randomly had to become the cringiest villain of Wow?

40kb/s isen't good and I wouldn't consider it bad I would consider it shit =).

It also depends on what you're downloading and where you're looking. The beta GW2 client shows low speeds for people but in actuality it's downloading 3-5x (or more) faster, due to it only showing one of multiple connection speeds. You can verify the actual connection speed in task manager.
Of course, 40kbps is still horrible even for a single connection, but it does depend on what type of connection you have and what other downloads you have going on. For example, torrents used to kill my old router and dropped my download speed to similar values.

Um . . . that's terrible, unless you're on a 52k modem.
OP said 40 KiloBYTES/s though, not 40 KiloBITS
40KB/s = 320Kb/s, hell of a 56K modem you have then.
It's still slow though...
Btw: Mbitps doesn't equal MByteps
8Mbps = 1 MBps
My connection is 24Mbps and therefore 3MBps

sounds like you live in South Africa as the most common adls pack sold is the 384 kb line
yeah sad truth our connection choices:
384kb
4mb &
10mb lines are what we get here + we have to buy a data package separate from the line so yeah crappy line speed + shitty cap = <sad face>

Defining 'wireless connection' might add some perspective. Do you mean a WiFi connection, or a cellular network?Originally Posted by BikBoi

I'm DLing off a wireless connection btw.
I generally run off a Verizon Wireless 3g (EvDO), and usually get 100-150KB/s when downloading things like wow patches, diablo beta, etc. Speedtest shows me at an average of 1.3-1.5Mb/s download rate.
Now if they'd finally just put a 4g site up to serve my neighborhood....

I live in a field and get 400KB/s (connection is about 3.4Mbit).

40 KB/sec = 0.3277 Mb/sec VERY slow by today's standards.

Wireless as in Cellular?
If So, glad i'm not paying your bill.
Ping times have to be near 300ms too.
Fyi: dial-up 56k at 100% efficency (not deducting for error correction and parity bits) would only get you 7KB/sec.

I run exclusively off of cellular data service. I generaly get 180-200ms pings on 3g, 70-120ms on 4g, so it's not really that bad. And from a cost perspective, $50USD for unlimited anywhere in the US (grandfathered plan) is a pretty good deal from my perspective.Originally Posted by ApocolypticTampon

it's 110Kb. That's 13.75KB/s which is less than the 40KB/s.Originally Posted by Synthaxx
Actually, on Dial-up, you'd be EXTREMELY lucky to hit 15KB/s actual download speed. I remember i only hit that speed once when i was on 56K, and i was like "Who the hell fed roids to my line?".
<snip>
110KB/s there
That's > 40KB/s =P

For some reason when i run a speed test it shows 12mb but when i download something its only 45kb-70kb at most.

With a 12Mb line, you should be able to download at 1.5MB/s. Whether or not you reach that is different, but I'd expect 1.2MB/s from a good server with that line.Originally Posted by Rivehn
