Updated by Madison Lennon on February 24, 2020: Gaming is more popular than ever and lots of couples enjoy spending time together by hunkering down on their PS4 to compete or work together on a game. But it's nice when the games are free to offer a wider selection of choices.

We decided to revisit this list and update it with a few more fun games that are free-to-play and great for couples. Previously, a few items on this list were only free for a limited time so we've fixed it with some different choices!

13 Guns Up!

Some couples don't necessarily want to compete against each other but would rather take down other people while working on the same team. Guns Up! will let you do that since the game allows players to build alliances together before embarking on intense military raids to take down their opponents.

It will be up to you to organize raids and it will necessitate smart strategy work to ensure you're making the right moves and not allowing anyone to attack your own bases. You get to attack, but you can also work together to defend your home bases.

12 Trove

For those who prefer a more exploratory game than one full of combat, you and your significant other might enjoy playing Trove. It's an MMORPG that will let you explore nearly infinite realms with randomly-generated caves and dungeons. It's full of imaginative characters and strange underground creatures that you can befriend and make your companions.

You can work together to build new worlds and homes, plus lots of the content existing in Trove has been generated by players in the game. Interact with players from around the world as you traverse a vast and varied landscape of wonder.

11 Dauntless

If a staple of your relationship is Monster Hunter: World but you're on a budget and can't afford the game for whatever reason, you might consider trying out Dauntless. It's a free-to-play game where you can play in a cooperative mode to tackle massive boss-sized monsters, and from there, you can craft armor and weaponry from what you retrieve and scavenge after your fights.

The great thing about this game is it offers cross-region and cross-platform play, so if your significant other is long-distance or traveling, you can still play together.

10 Let It Die

Let It Die is a rather chaotic hack-and-slash game with elements of horror. One of the main draws is the highly customizable feature since you begin with your character in their underwear as they attempt to fight their way through a myriad of enemies while staying alive by any means possible.

You won't immediately be able to play multiplayer but once you get a few levels into the game the option will become available to you. When your character dies they will be reanimated in another player's world.

9 SMITE

If you have a fascination with mythology and Gods then SMITE might be the perfect game for you and your honey to play. One of the nice things about it is that it caters to all skill levels.

You can start in lower-skilled arenas if you've never played a Multiplayer Online Battleground Arena game like this one before. 8 Brawlhalla

Brawlhalla has been a highly reviewed, action-packed fighter since its release in October 2017, and lives up to the hype with repeated updates and content releases. Players are able to engage in thrilling combat online, offline, with up to eight players, four on one console, and 40 playable heroes to master. With quick action, couples could easily resolve a disagreement about where to eat for dinner by hopping in a battleground and determining the outcome through pure skill.

7 Dynasty Warriors 8

A true split-screen, hack-and-slash, historically inaccurate but incredibly engaging journey, Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires will hit all the sweet notes for a couple needing to let off some steam. A franchise that has been going strong since its first installment in 1997 for the original PlayStation, Dynasty Warriors is a fun take on Chinese historical battles.

Join the ranks of famous generals with mystical weapons and powers, and use them to crush literally thousands of little warriors in a strategic battle to overcome the other kingdoms. Fully split-screen compatible and easy to jump straight into, couples can work together to overcome difficult strategic battles, or fight against one another on an ancient, virtual battlefield.

6 Gwent: The Witcher Card Game

One of the greatest strategic card games released within another full game, Gwent has been played between amateurs and even competitively since its release within The Witcher 3 in 2015. In 2017, CD Projekt Red, the beloved developers of some of the highest rated games ever and of the soon to be released Cyberpunk 2077, decided to release Gwent as a standalone game on PS4, Xbox One, and PC for free. Couples with two consoles (so no cheating!) will love to get into this strategic card battling game.

5 Apex Legends

The newest of major battle royale style games released for the Ps4, Apex Legends was a smash hit as soon as it hit the market. Developed by Respawn Entertainment, the same company that created the amazing Titanfall series, Apex Legends has the skeleton of one of the smoothest shooters and adds the competitive aspect of the battle royale system. With excellent rewards and quick gameplay, couples with two systems will be able to work together to take down other players by communicating well and even resurrecting their partner after death.

4 Fortnite

The classic battle royale game, Fortnite is beloved by many, and continues to be one of the top-streamed games on Twitch after two years in the market. Though there is a high skill cap for high-level play, Fornite is one of the easiest and most fun-for-all-ages shooter.

With simple graphics, fun exploration of a large map, and nearly constant updates from the developers that completely change the map and add new items frequently, Fortnite is an excellent choice for couples with two gaming stations. 3 Paladins

What's the perfect game for couples that like to shoot things, but don't like the battle royale genre? Try out Paladins, an Overwatch-like free-to-play game with twenty different champions to master. Use abilities, weapons, healing skills and more to cooperate and knock down the enemy's objectives or protect your own. Toting short games that are highly competitive, Paladins is a great choice for couples with two Playstations.

Last but certainly not least, one of the highest-rated online multiplayer RPGs created is Warframe. Initially released in 2013 and carefully curated by the developers at Digital Extremes, Warframe is flooded with updates, content releases, and an excellent community that helps any new players fit right in. The world of Warframe is beautifully crafted and incredibly large, leaving a full universe to explore with a loved one.

With numerous cooperative activities to complete, several different playstyles to choose from and more, Warframe has a stellar track record and continues to thrive in its maturity. Couples will need two consoles to explore the galaxy together, but will certainly enjoy their journey.
