Protect Yourself From Tech Support Scams

Tech support scams are an industry-wide issue where scammers trick you into paying for unnecessary technical support services. You can help protect yourself from scammers by verifying that the contact is a Microsoft Agent or Microsoft Employee and that the phone number is an official Microsoft global customer service number.

Hi Bob,

What is the error message displayed when you try to print?

What is the full model number of the printer?

This issue could be caused due to some incorrect settings or due to a corrupt or incompatible printer driver. I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

Method 1:

First, I would suggest you to run the built-in printer troubleshooter that can automatically detect and fix most of the incorrect settings and errors that could cause issues with Printing. Refer to these steps:

a)      Press Windows key +F to bring up the search Charms bar.

b)      Select settings in the drop down menu below search and type Troubleshooting.

c)       Click on Troubleshooting and select the view all option on the left pane.

d)      Click on Printer troubleshooter and follow the prompts.

Method 2:

If the issue still persists, then the issue could be caused due to a corrupt or outdated driver. In this case, I would suggest you to visit the manufacturer’s website to download and install the latest printer driver and check.

If the issue still persists, get back to us with the above requested information so that we can help you accordingly.

Cheers,
Ben.

Printer is a vintage HP Laserjet 5MP -- C3155A.   Microsoft site indicates it should be compatible with 8 and 8,1,   I've reloaded the recommended driver several times with no luck.  Only error message I get is on the printers "What's Printing" pop up.   When I try to print it cranks along for several minutes -- then gives me a rather simplistic "error - printing" message.   Not much help. Trouble Shooter repeatedly telling me it can't detect any problems.  What's curious is that the Laserjet was working fine on both 8 and 8.1 before the computer went out for it's last repair job.   Continues to function fine when hooked up to an older XP computer.
I agree that it smells like a driver problem however reloading doesn't seem to resolve it.

Hi Bob,

If the printer worked with Windows 8.1 earlier, then some incorrect setting or a driver compatibility issue is causing this issue now. I would suggest you to try these steps and check:

Method 1:

If the driver installed initially was corrupt, it might cause issues even when we install new drivers later. To check if this is the case, I would suggest you to uninstall the current driver through device manager and then install the new driver and check. Refer to these steps:

a)      Press Windows key + X, select Device manager.

b)      Locate the Printer.

c)       Right click the device and select “Properties”.

d)      Click on the driver tab to check the current driver installed for that device.

e)      Click on the uninstall button to uninstall that driver.

f)       Now, restart the computer. Windows will install the device with the generic Windows driver.

g)      Check if the issue persist with the generic driver. If yes, install the new driver from the manufacturer’s website and check.

Note: When I checked the manufacturer’s website, I couldn’t find driver for this model as the website reported this model as a discontinued product. If you have an installation disc, I would suggest you to install the driver provided in the disc in compatibility mode. Refer to this article for information on compatibility mode:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/older-programs-compatible-version-windows

If the issue still persists, it is possible that some other program or service in the background is conflicting with the printer services and causing this issue. To check this, I would suggest you to boot the computer in a clean boot state and check. Booting the computer in a clean boot state can reduce software conflicts and help identify the root cause of the issue. You can refer to this article for more information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Note: After troubleshooting, reset the computer to start as usual. Refer to the step How to set the computer to start as usual after clean boot troubleshooting under more information.

Try these steps and let us know the results. We’d be happy to help if you need any further assistance.

Cheers,
Ben.

Hi,

I had similar problems with a X5340... I ended up having to reinstall several times to figure out the problem... You may not need to if the following does the trick...

One thing you might check first is to make sure the Print Spooler in "SERVICES" is started, and Bidirectional Support is Enabled... If this doesn't help, you will probably need to uninstall\reinstall.

The "Print Spooler" can be found in Control Panel... Administrative Tools... Services.

To find Bidirectional Support, right click on the printer in Devices and Printers, select Printer Properties, PORTS tab, and it will be near the bottom...

I have found that the printer needs to be physically unhooked from the computer to change the Bidirectional Support. Otherwise the change won't stick..

If you attempt to reinstall, turn off the Print Spooler, REMOVE your printer from Devices and Printers, and unhook it from your computer, and uninstall the software\drivers.

When reinstalling, make sure the Print Spooler is turned off... The reinstallation should turn it back on... It is supposed to start automatically.
